Shawty Lo Drops Two New Tracks, But Has G Unit Forgot About Him??
When 50 Cent signed Bankhead baron Shawty Lo to his G-Unit label, expectations were high that Lo was about to crossover into more mainstream, commercial success.
About a year later, here are these two tracks, which dropped over the weekend I guess. No hate, but Lo didn’t need G-Unit to drop these tracks, which are aiight but not fantastic. And I’m wondering what is G-Unit planning on doing with Lo, since right about now, Lo is just a song or two away from being on a Hip Hop milk carton.
Shawty Lo is cool as a fan but, ummm, he needs to tell 50 Cent to seriously step his game up on the label boss tip. That man is doing absolutely nothing to help Lo’s languishing career. Don’t you think so too?

Soulja Boy’s New Album Cover
Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy says his new album will defy expectations, restore the Hip Hop public’s rapidly eroding confidence in his artistry, and prove he’s matured:
“Right now I’m working on my new album, It’s called ‘Promise’ — my fourth album to release from Interscope Records. It’ll be in stores top of 2012. I want everybody to support.”
[The album is] just really showing the growth and maturity of Soulja Boy. It’s going to be dope. It’s going to be lot of great records on it, a lot of dope features, a lot of great production. I want all my fans to check it out.”–(HHNM)
He’s got his work cut out for him. Last year’s The DeAndre Way was supposed to do all those same things and it notoriously flopped.
As of late, Soulja’s music has earned few headlines, but his extracurricular activities and commentary otherwise have: In just the last year alone, Soulja dissed the troops; lied about buying a private jet; and managed to get bagged in Carroll County, Georgia on a drug case–which is still pending.
Soulja’s made lots of money and earned international fame over the years. But another flop album may indicate consumers are seriously over this fella.

Young Buck’s New Mixtape Coming Out On Maybach Music??
Check out this interview with Young Buck where he discusses his new mixtape, which will be released on Rick Ross’ Maybach Music label.
“The Rehab Mixtape was basically a mixtape I put out there. It didn’t end up getting distributed. I’ve put out Back on my Buck Shit Volume 1. Volume 2 was produced by Drumma Boy. Salute to Drumma Boy. I’m working on a mixtape right now on behalf of Maybach Music. Salute to them.”
Interesting. But what does this mixtape release actually mean for Buck’s career? Is he headed to Maybach, contrary to reports of a potential landing at Young Money/Cash Money? And if so, how come Maybach hasn’t said anything about it?
Rumor has it that signing Buck to any label is still touch and go, since that issue with 50 Cent is still resonating. But wherever Buck lands at, he needs to hit the ground running with any project he gets because he’s starting to look like a Hip Hop vagabond who can’t find a musical home.

Digable Planets Don’t Hate Each Other Anymore; Plan Tour + Album
Back in the 90s, the Digable Planets were one of the most promising groups to emerge on the then-quickly evolving Hip Hop scene. They famously welded Hip Hop and Jazz and the fans dug it.
But the group’s members–Butterfly, Ladybug Mecca, and Cee Knowledge (formerly known as Doodlebug)– seemed to hate each other for awhile, with reports that Mecca for awhile refused to have anything at all to do with the two fellas in the group. But a tough economy may have led to a change of heart.
It’ll be interesting to hear what these three have come up with all these years later. It’ll be even more interesting to see if they’ll be able to re-attract their older fans, who may have forgotten them, and younger fans who may not give a shit either way.

Who Deserves The Best Rap Album Grammy??

Kanye West leads the 54th annual Grammys nomination list with a total of 7 nominations. He’s already won 14 Grammys in the past so look for him to add a few more to his collection this year.
One of the nods Kanye is up for is Best Rap Album of the year. And he’s nominated twice–once for his collaborative effort with Jay-Z, Watch The Throne; and also for his solo set, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Also nominated are Lil Wayne’s Carter IV; Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday; and Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers.
I’m thinking either Lil Wayne or Nicki deserves this one. Honestly, Lupe shouldn’t even be part of the conversation, and Kanye is just getting a nod because he’s Kanye, but you might disagree.
You can check out the full list of Grammy nominees here.

Dr. Dre’s Headphones Raking In Almost $500 Million A Year??
Legendary producer Dr. Dre is flush with even more cash now that his ‘Beats By Dre’ headphones are selling faster than discounted lean in a trap house. Sales are closing in on $500 million annually, and market analysts have credited Dre with changing the headphone game, which had receded in recent years.
Beats by Dr. Dre “set off a free-for-all among companies entering the category, many of which relied on celebrity endorsements or style, as opposed to focusing on audio quality per se,” said Ross Rubin, the executive director of industry analysis at NPD.
“What Beats did,” Mr. Rubin added, “was dramatically expand the market and make the price premium acceptable, as much as for the design and the brand as for the audio quality.”–(NYTimes)
Oh yeah-price. These things run around $300 each. And they’re moving fast which goes to show that some people will throw their money away on anything. But not everybody’s sold on the luxury headphones. Some say the phones pack too much bass and are only mediocre in audio quality when compared to a few of its much less expensive competitors.
But $500 million says it all, right?
Surprise: Drake Debuts At #1
Canadian rapper Drake debuted at #1 on the record sales charts with close to 660K records sold this past week, according to Hits Daily Double.
The first week success of Take Care eclipses the first week sales of his last album, Thank Me Later, which sold 463K last year in its opening week debut.
This is the third biggest debut of the year, behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne.
Hits Daily also reminded us that this is the second consecutive #1 debut for a Jewish rapper in as many weeks, following last week’s Mac Miller chart-topper.
Since we’re living in the age of emo rappers, does this mean gangsta rap is officially dead?
