Tyler Perry’s ‘Good Deeds’ Snags #2 Box Office Spot
Tyler Perry’s latest film, Good Deeds, took the #2 box office spot over the weekend. The film, which stars a hetero-channelling Tyler Perry in the main role, and also Thandie Newton, Gabrielle Union and Phylicia Rashad, earned $15, 583,924 for its opening. This all proves once again that Black folks love them some Tyler Perry movies. And that’s a good thing for TP because if Black folks stop liking his movies, there would be a lot of empty theater seats anytime a TP movie drops.
Meanwhile, TP has long wanted to shed his Madea gowns for more serious acting fare and Deeds aims to help him move in that direction.
I didn’t see the film but feel free to leave feedback if you did.

Tyler Perry Has Yet Another Movie Ready To Drop
Now that the hoopla surrounding his defiant choice to cast celebrity bedroom bandit Kim Kardashian in The Marriage Counselor has subsided, Tyler Perry has one more film coming down the pike.
TP damn sure knows how to keep getting your money, doesn’t he?
Good Deeds is the name of the uber-successful Atlanta playwright and director’s new film, which hits theaters in February 2012. Perry won’t be revisiting his granny tranny alter ego, Madea, in Deeds, but instead offers what concernedly sounds like a ghettoised flip of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts’ old flick, Pretty Woman:
A successful, wealthy businessman, Wesley Deeds (Tyler Perry) has always done what’s expected of him, whether it’s assuming the helm of his father’s company, tolerating his brother’s misbehavior at the office or planning to marry his beautiful but restless fiancée, Natalie (Gabrielle Union). But Wesley is jolted out of his predictable routine when he meets Lindsey (Thandie Newton), a down-on-her-luck single mother who works on the cleaning crew in his office building. When he offers to help her get back on her feet, the chance encounter with someone so far outside his usual circle ignites something in Wesley. This one good deed may finally spark his courage to exchange the life that’s expected of him for the life he’s always really wanted.–(Comingsoon.net)
Peculiarly, Tyler Perry’s trailers are sometimes better than his movies so I’ll post this trailer as soon as TP drops it.

Whitney Houston And Jordin Sparks Talk To ET About New ‘Sparkle’ Movie
Take a look at Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks talking with Entertainment Tonight about the new movie they star in together, ‘Sparkle’.
The film is actually a remake of the 1970s film of the same name, which starred Irene Cara, Phillip Michael Thomas and Lonette McKee.
Its good to see Whitney looking healthy and beautiful. I’m sure she’s glad she’s not having to deal with any more late night crack hunt rumors.
Reportedly, producers had been trying to do the Sparkle remake for over a decade. Originally, Aaliyah was their first choice to play Sparkle.

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ Breaks Box Office Record
The latest movie in what appears to be a never-ending franchise, ‘Paranormal Activity 3′, broke weekend box office records, according to news sources. The haul was a hefty $54 million. Not bad for a movie chain that originally started on a $15,000 budget just a couple of years or so ago.
The third film in Paramount Pictures’ low-budget fright franchise, which was No. 1 at the box office, had the biggest debut ever for a horror movie, according to Sunday studio estimates. It broke the previous record part two set a year ago with $40.7 million. It’s also the biggest opening ever for an October release, topping the $50.35 million Paramount’s “Jackass 3D” made last year.–(FOX)
The new film is supposed to be a prequel to the other two films. I didn’t get a chance to see the new one over the weekend but the other two creeped me the fuck out. Props to the movie’s producers for recognizing that psychological fear, and the horror of not seeing what’s behind that door, is usually more terrifying than seeing a 100 foot monster hopping out of a spaceship.

Kim Kardashian And Tyler Perry Working On Movie Together

It looks like Kim Kardashian has decided to jump down with Tyler Perry. The world renowned reality star, who gained fame for just being pretty and hanging out everywhere, will co-star in a new Perry film, The Marriage Counselor, based on a previous Perry play, that begins production October 26th in Atlanta.
The film tells the story of Judith, an Ivy League-educated relationship expert who makes her living dispensing marital advice, but is so bored with her own marriage that she breaks her professional code and cheats with a smooth talking client only to realize she has made a huge mistake. Jurnee Smollett plays the marriage counselor and Kardashian will play Ava, a co-worker who gives Judith a big city makeover and new confidence as she struggles with her personal issues. Kardashian previously played roles in the films Deep in the Valley and Disaster Movie.–(Deadline)
How ironic that Kim is slated to play in a film about relationships when her latest one is reportedly headed for Splitsville; her hubby Kris Humphries was spotted a few days ago, taking his packed-up shit out of the hotel suite the couple had been temporarily sharing.
Tyler Perry wants to try to move beyond his signature “Blacks-only” films that have come under heavy criticism for their minstrel-show feel and lame plots. No word yet on whether or not Perry will reprise his role as gun-slinging, granny tranny Madea in this film.

Report: Fantasia Baby Daddy Drama Threat To Mahalia Jackson Movie Project
According to the NY Post, drama is playing out behind the scenes of the biopic film based on the life of the late Gospel great Mahalia Jackson. ‘American Idol’ winner Fantasia is slated to play the title role but its getting sticky. At issue: Fantasia’s unexpected pregnancy via an already married dude.
Some people might not be able to get over the irony of a chick who got herself scandalously knocked up by a married man (whom she reportedly stole from his wife) playing the role of a sanctified woman in a major motion picture. Some folks might even think that’s akin to Superhead playing the Virgin Mary in a movie. That line of thinking may be working against Fantasia.
From the NY Post:
Members of legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson’s estate are aghast that 2004 “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino has become pregnant by a married man as she prepares to play the Queen of Gospel in the biographical film “Mahalia!”
Producers are also furious with Fantasia, 27, for not telling them about her unexpected pregnancy until she was four months in. “She [initially] claimed that she was putting on weight for the role,” an insider said.
Production of the movie has been pushed back because of Fantasia’s pregnancy with her married boyfriend, Antwaun Cook. (NY Post)
What’s worse is that Fantasia could be booted from the project. That leaves the door open for….drum roll please…MISSY ELLIOTT?? Say what?? And could Fantasia’s personal life inadvertently trash Mahalia Jackson’s good name?
Cee-Lo Green Joins Whitney Houston And Other Stars For ‘Sparkle’ Remake
Atlanta rapper Cee Lo Green has been included in the star studded cast of the remake of the classic 1970s film, ‘Sparkle’, according to Variety:
“Sparkle” director Salim Akil has already cast Whitney Houston in Sony’s music-themed drama, and now another Grammy winner has enlisted in the ensemble, as Cee-Lo Green has joined the cast along with Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Omari Hardwick.
Additionally, R&B artist R. Kelly has signed on to write original music for the soundtrack.
“American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks stars as the title character, a music prodigy who struggles to become a star as she overcomes issues that are tearing her family apart.
Whitney Houston is slated to play Sparkle’s mother.
The movie will also feature Derek Luke, Mike Epps and more.
In case you didn’t know, the original Sparkle is considered a staple Black movie. The 1976 version starred Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, Mary Alice and Phillip Michael Thomas.
The story revolved around the lives of four young sisters who embark on a journey to pursue a music career in 1950s Harlem–but with tragic results.
No word on when the remake will be released but production begins early next month in Detroit. Its reported that the updated film will be set in the 1960s during the rise of Motown.

New ‘Scarface’ Movie Coming
“Say hello to my little friend!” is one of the most famous lines ever said in a modern film. And now you might soon get to hear it again–or maybe something else just as clever. Universal Pictures is planning a new ‘Scarface’ for your movie going pleasure.
The 1983 film, starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana, was set in the backdrop of 1970s-80s South Florida, at the height of the lucrative cocaine drug trade. The new film might have a somewhat different storyline:
The film is not intended to be a remake or a sequel. It will take the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition.
The studio is keeping the specifics of where the new Tony character comes from under wraps at the moment, but ethnicity and geography were important in the first two versions. In the 1932 Scarface, an Italian (Paul Muni) took over Chicago, and in the Brian De Palma-directed remake, a Cuban cornered the cocaine trade in 1980s Miami, only to be consumed by it. Ann Dvorak, George Raft and Boris Karloff starred in the original and Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio starred in the remake.–(Deadline)
Scarface is a treasured classic and is still a highly influential film in the Hip Hop community. Hip Hop was starting to emerge as a cultural force when ‘Face dropped in ’83. The whole concept of gettin’ it–and gettin’ it big–from the movie probably helped inspire Hip Hop’s “get money” mentality.
What ethnic group do you think are most likely to be represented in he new movie? Do you think the new ‘Scarface’ is gonna be as big as the last one? Remember, the 1983 film made over $135 million worldwide and has sold 10 million copies on DVD. That’s tough to beat.
Will you be there to see it?
