Michael Vick Covers UPTOWN Magazine

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick snagged another magazine cover and will be featured in the upcoming issue of ‘UPTOWN’ Magazine.

The publication shared part of its interview with Vick and, as expected, Vick talked about his rebirth, how he couldn’t get shit done in Atlanta , and his hopes for the future.

Its funny how Vick likes to tell everybody that Atlanta was so detrimental to him evolving into a better player and yet these days, he’s been playing worse than he ever did as a Falcon.

“I am determined to become a better student of the game and I knew I had to work at it,” says Vick. “I was young when I was in Atlanta. I’m older now. I’ve been through a lot and I think I’ve matured. I had some good years there, but I’m just so thankful to be in Philadelphia right now. I could not have landed in a better city. This is my home. This is where I want to be, and I take this opportunity seriously.”

“I play the game the way I know how to play it,” Vick tells UPTOWN, after the magazine spent months trying to negotiate an interview. He’s understandably cautious about whom he talks to and what he says.

“You have to take precautions, but this is what I love to do. I want to be there for my team and do what I have to do as a quarterback to be successful.”–(UPTOWN)

Vick’s interviews all sound alike. He must be playing it safe I guess. Meanwhile, he’d better keep winning in Philly because those fans hate losing. If the Eagles fall against their much hated division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, Sunday night, the chorus of people saying he’s a $100 million flop is gonna get louder.

Is Mike Vick In Trouble In Philly??

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles “Dream Team” is turning into one ugly ass nightmare, football fans in the “City of Brotherly Love” are getting stereotypically restless-and are calling for heads to roll.

One of those heads is quarterback Mike Vick, the man who they agreed to pay $100 million not too long ago. Vick was expected to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory, or two, or three, or more. Instead, Vick is throwing countless interceptions, fumbling balls, racking up sacks and spends a lot of his time running for dear life on the football field because his offensive line couldn’t stop a purse snatcher running on one leg. And now the Eagles are 1-4 and in real danger of missing the playoffs.

But, its not all Vick’s fault–and his job is safe. However, Philly fans don’t mind getting rid of QBs. Just ask Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb, both of whom were banished by the Eagles.

Instead, though, Coach Andy Reid is gonna be the one to ride for this disaster. His weekly act of contrition, falling on his sword and taking the blame while the Eagles squad slips into ever-deepening disarray, is an old act and its seriously wearing on fans’ and team officials’ nerves. And after 13 seasons and no Super Bowl victory, a lot of people want Reid gone–for real this time–and as soon as like yesterday.

So unless things change, and extremely quickly, Reid is likely to be out of there after this season. In contrast, Vick is gonna be sitting pretty with that hundred mill no matter what happens so he doesn’t have a thing to worry about. At least not this year anyway.

NY Post Puts Vick In Baby Pamper On Cover

The New York Post is at it again. Check out their “Baby Vick” cover on the left. The cover is apparently in response to Vick’s post-game interview with the press corps when he complained about getting hit a lot as a quarterback.

Vick also said some of the hits he suffered during the Eagles game against the Giants should have resulted in penalties against the Giants that Vick says weren’t called by the refs.

Vick ended up leaving the game before its conclusion with a bruised, non-throwing right hand, an injury suffered during one of the many times Giants players were able to hurl Vick around the field.

But the Giants say they didn’t do anything wrong. But you expected them to say that, huh?

And they don’t seem too apologetic either:

“I’m not gonna feel sorry for him,” Justin Tuck said.
“I didn’t see anything on film [yesterday] that looked like we were doing anything dirty,” Dave Tollefson said…
As defensive linemen, that’s our job — we’re supposed to hit the quarterback. I don’t think any of us apologize for any type of way that we hit him.”–(NYPost)

Mike Vick: NFL Refs Not Doing Their Jobs

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick injured his right hand yesterday in a bruising loss to the Eagles’ division rival the New York Giants.

Its the second week in a row that the Pro-Bowl quarterback has been injured; last week, he suffered a concussion against the Atlanta Falcons.

Vick was quick to say the he wasn’t blaming the game’s referees for his injured, non-throwing hand before he, actually, blamed the referees for the reported “deep bruise” to his non-throwing, injured hand:

“The refs have to do their job, and I’m not blaming the referees by any stretch, so let’s not get it twisted here,” Vick said. “I’m just saying I think everybody on the field should do their job.”
“If you look at all the replays,” Vick said, “I’m on the ground every time, and it’s unfortunate for myself, and it’s unfortunate for my team. . . . Every time I throw the ball, I’m on the ground, getting hit in the head, and I don’t know why.”–(Mike Vick)

Vick seems to think he’s being left for dead on the field by the refs simply because he’s Mike Vick. I don’t agree with that. But I do agree that he has a point: NFL referees have gotten extremely lousy at calling penalties AND helping protect the quarterback. Its a long-standing problem that’s only gotten extremely worse over the last few seasons.

However, Vick can’t blame all of his injuries on the refs. Truth be told, the Eagles offensive line leaves much to be desired in efficiency and capability. But if changes aren’t made–and fast–Vick is right; a player is gonna end up seriously hurt on the football field.

Did Vick “Check Out” Of Eagles-Falcons Game??

Last night’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons has been called everything from a bloodsport to a savage meeting of barbarians by clever sports writers, who must have expected to see “Swan Lake” instead of a grudge match. The game is rugged and so are the players. They know what time it is when they sign that contract.

There is a reason only men play in the NFL–and that’s not a sexist statement. Pro football is mean, often violent and frequently combative. Play after play, for three  and one half hours, 2 and 300 hundred pound bodies are hurled into, on top of and across each other. People are body slammed, knocked to the ground and spend the afternoon rolling around in grass that has been spit on.

To keep it simple, this is not Rugby or golf. So why is everybody acting like they’re shocked that Vick got hurt?

Let’s face it, the Eagles offensive line has never figured out how to protect Vick–and it shows. Eagles fans want to believe Vick was purposely knocked out of the game, in hopes of turning the game, which is untrue. If that was the case, then I guess Falcons fans could say the same about the Eagles, who got away with damn near beheading Matt Ryan in what appeared to be a purposeful helmet to helmet tackle on the quarterback–a definite NO-NO. Last night’s lousy referees ignored the hit though.

Some are saying Ryan, who was battered just as much as Vick, was the tougher QB in the match. And some are wondering just how much of this madness can Vick take?

Watching Matt Ryan and Mike Vick get hit so many times wasn’t easy. And no matter what Vick did, his mediocre O-line had to keep picking him up off the ground. When he ran, the Falcons went after that ass. When he stood still, they went after that ass. Vick learned a hard but simple lesson: Holding a football after the snap makes you a target. And targets get hit.

A human body can only take so much. Last week, Vick got tossed around against the St. Louis Rams. The thrashing he took last night wasn’t even as bad although the Falcons got to him more times than the Rams did. Did Vick’s body finally get tired of all that abuse–and he lost his will to stay in the Matador’s ring? Did he realize his mediocre O-line was gonna be the death of him if he stayed on that field? I wouldn’t blame him if he did “check out”. The Vick jerseys in the stands were misleading–last night’s game was not going to be a coronation.

As Vick was helped from the field, he spit out blood and then wobbled to the bench before leaving. He wasn’t made available for postgame interviews because new league rules make it so concussed players don’t have to talk.
Some in the Falcons locker room did the talking for him. Some players thought Vick checked out of the game.
“You could see him early taking those shots and he didn’t want to be there,” one Falcon said. “I’m not saying he checked out because he’s soft. It’s just that we hit him a lot.”–(Pete Prisco/CBS Sports)

Under the circumstances, its understandable.

Eagles Put On Ice In Hotlanta

As expected, tons of Michael Vick fans showed up to see Vick’s homecoming in the A. They wore his jerseys–both the Atlanta and Philadelphia one–and made plenty of noise from the stands.

Interestingly, the Vick vs. Matt Ryan fans fell sharply along racial lines, as many Black fans attended the game in Vick jerseys and many White fans attended the game in Matt Ryan jerseys.

It was quite a homecoming. But it might not have ended the way fans–nor Vick–expected.

The Atlanta Falcons defied naysayers and hung in there to win one of the ugliest Falcons home games in NFL Sunday night history, beating the Eagles at the Georgia Dome 35-31.

It was a game that saw several lead changes and multiple injuries. Both Michael Vick and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan took beatings tonight.

A third quarter sack ended with Vick colliding with his own teammate as he was being dragged to the ground. Vick left the field and was seen spitting out blood.

It was later reported that Vick has bitten his tongue and that Vick had also suffered a a concussion. He did not return to the game.

The all-star Philadelphia Eagles had been picked by many observers to roll the Falcons, who looked hapless last week against the Chicago Bears. But the Falcons played hard and tough and reminded the Eagles why they finished 13-3 last year: They play hard and are extremely tough to beat at home.

Side note: As Vick was leaving the field after his injury, he was booed. Sarcastically, Vick pointed to the scoreboard, essentially letting his haters know that he was beating them. At that point, the Eagles were ahead.

Thousands Of Atlanta Falcons Fans May Come To Georgia Dome Wearing Vick Jerseys

This Sunday night’s NFL game between the hometown Atlanta Falcons and the Mike Vick-led Philadelphia Eagles will be televised nationally from the Georgia Dome, where Mike Vick used to play as a Falcon from 2001 to 2007, the year he was cut loose after the infamous dog-fighting drama unfolded.

In attendance at the highly anticipated game are expected to be thousands of shameless Falcons fans who will, in honor of Vick’s return, will be sporting throwback Atlanta Falcons jerseys with Vick’s name and or # on it, to be exact, #7– the same number he currently wears as an Eagle.

Only in the A would such a scenario be possible. In any other city, that would be the equivalent of sports heresy. But not in Atlanta, where NFL fans like every other team besides the home team.

Oh, and I’m not hating on Vick. The man is a legend and the way he fell and then came back on top is miraculous and inspiring. But when its time for him to play against the Falcons, I’m all about home squad.

Oh, and strictly from an Atlanta sports fan standpoint, when will folks just get over it? The man has moved on, he’s making big dollars once again and he doesn’t even have a crib in this city. He’s put the ATL in his rear view mirror, so when will the ATL do likewise to him?

…I’m so thankful to be in Philly right now. I know things happen for a reason. Maybe it was meant for me to be here. I couldn’t have landed in a better city, a better place. This is my home, this is where I want to be. I’m just thankful for that.”–(Mike Vick, ESPN)

Case closed.

So what do you think–should Falcons fans wear Vick jerseys to the game, or is that sports treason?

Mike Vick Is Once Again Ballin’, Signs Yet Another $100 Million Deal

Lightning does sometimes strike twice. Just ask Mike Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback who served a stint in federal prison but made an enormous comeback by landing the starting center job with the Philadelphia Eagles: Today he signed a deal worth $100 million.

The deal places him in very select company:

Vick’s six-year, $100 million deal makes him the third-highest-paid player in the NFL, behind only Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.–(ESPN)

The hefty deal shows the Eagles are placing a lot of confidence in Vick, who had an outstanding first year as Eagles QB last year, despite having only been out of prison for barely a year. The move means the Eagles consider Vick their franchise quarterback and are in it for the long haul with him.

Its the second time Vick has netted that big a paycheck; in 2005, he signed a $137 million deal with the Falcons before the dog fighting issues surfaced.

And earning lots of loot makes one philosophical. Or so I’ve heard. Here’s what Vick had to say after he bagged his loot:

“It’s a lot of money, however you look at it,” Vick said. “Obviously, it’s going to create a lot of demands. I know what comes along with it, and I know how to handle it. But it’s not even about the money. It’s about the changes that have been made in my life. Kids have an opportunity to see that you should never count yourself out.–(ESPN)

Congrats to Mike Vick. I bet he’ll be partying his ass off in Philly tonight–and so will his baby mama(s?). Meanwhile, hopefully he doesn’t fuck up this time around. I mean, how many chances in life do you get to make $100 milli?
