Cash Money Records Is Turning Into An Old Timers Club
If you haven’t already heard, 90s alternative Hip Hop Rock group Limp Bizkit has jumped down with Cash Money Records. And somebody threw in former Murder Inc. songstress Ashanti in as part of some sort of two-for-one deal I guess? But on the real, is it my imagination or is Cash Money Records turning into a rest home for has beens, also rans and over the hill rappers and singers? Busta Rhymes and Mystikal and now Limp Bizkit and Ashanti. Busta and Mystikal are past their prime; nobody even remembers Limp Bizkit; and Ashanti, bless her beautiful heart, still can’t sin worth a damn. Who told her to cover a Whitney Houston track?
At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if Baby decided to sign Kurtis Blow, Paul Simon and the B-52s next.

Soulja Boy Suing Over Management Contract
You already knew that Soulja Boy was no nuclear physicist, but who could have guessed that, for years, he’s been getting allegedly screwed out of what is probably millions of dollars by his ex-manager, a man SB says lured him into signing a contract that was “unconscionable, oppressive, and unjust”?
According to the docs, the contracts included a management agreement that gave Ransom 5% of Soulja’s income … forever … relating to work the rapper completed while Ransom was his manager.
Another contract allegedly gave 50% of all Soulja’s music copyrights to his record label — a deal the rapper now claims is “commercially unreasonable” and “contrary to music industry custom and practice.”–(TMZ)
Its possible that declining record and nose candy sales have SB taking a harder look at his finances, thus the pending lawsuit. Just goes to show that all record industry contracts are NOT created equal.

Young Buck Signs To Young Money/Cash Money??
G-Unit boss 50 Cent had Nashville rapper Young Buck looking like his very own personalized version of Kunta Kinte for a minute. The once highly popular Buck was said to owe Fiddy about $10 million in record contract money, which by all accounts, Fiddy wanted. That development kept Buck’s once thriving rap career in limbo.
But there may be new hope on the horizon for Buck, who recently endured an IRS seizure and reported fire sale of a lot of his personal shit: He’s signed to a new label.
Buck made the announcement during a recent concert, captured in the video above. And speculation has mounted that it is in fact Baby and Lil Wayne’s Young Money/Cash Money record company that drafted Buck.
Evidently, Baby has now reinvented himself as the Hip Hop version of TV junkman Fred Sanford, going around collecting rappers whose careers were thought to be DOA, and adding them to his label; just a few weeks ago, Baby signed old-timers Busta Rhymes and Mystikal to the New Orleans-based record empire.
If the rumors are true–though Buck did not confirm them–then this is a great turn of fortune for Young Buck. He still has a significant fan base out there, though he’s been mostly MIA for awhile. Maybe with Baby’s sure hand, he’ll release the type of quality stuff he once put out while he was down with G-Unit.

Cash Money To The Rescue: Busta Rhymes And Mystikal Make A Deal With Baby

Veteran rappers Busta Rhymes and Mystikal have each signed deals with Cash Money Records, which means they will now join an elite roster that includes Lil Wayne; Drake; Nicki Minaj and a few others. Its not a bad look for two old school rappers who have a combined 31 years in the rap game.
It probably couldn’t have come at a better time for Busta, whose career has seen better days. He’s been on a bunch of features the last few years, but his last album, Back on My B.S., dropped in 2009 and failed to even reach gold.
For Mystikal, it may be an even better deal: He hasn’t released an album in a decade. That’s understandable because Mystikal just got out of prison last year after serving several years over a state sex case and a federal tax evasion charge. As of late, labels weren’t lining up to sign the once marquee No Limit soldier.
Baby has been known to resurrect the sagging careers of famous artists, although his arrangement with the late Teena Marie reportedly didn’t turn out like roses. It will be interesting to see (and hear) what he has in store for these two old head rappers.

Suge Knight & Waka Flocka Link Up??
Waka Flocka told XXL some interesting news the other day: He and infamous Death Row CEO Suge Knight are now business partners.
“It’s valid. It ain’t no rumors. It’s what it is,” Waka said about working with the Death Row Records co-founder. “You gotta really start pulling in people in the game who know the game. Suge is not the only one. I’ma start snatching in the real ones. Suge helped me get a good movie deal. Now I need to get on the TV screen. Ain’t nothing wrong with fuckin’ with some Gs. I fuck with Master P too. They’re just good for information, homie.
“He’s helping me oversee the company,” Waka added about Knight. “I’m not trying to be ‘Pac, I’m not trying to be Death Row. I’m Brick Squad Monopoly. My mother is still my manager. I ain’t changing shit. It is what it is. But it’s like having Jordan and Kobe. Why not play with both?”–(XXL)
Is this Suge’s way of getting back in the game? Could be. We all know that Suge Knight can build an empire; the man single-handedly turned Death Row into a multi-million dollar machine. But Death Row’s fall was spectacular amid the shadow of the unsolved homicide of Tupac Shakur and the label’s eventual bankruptcy. And all of that happened with Suge at the helm.
But that was along time ago. Waka gets points for securing a famed former industry boss for his team. I guess we’ll have to just wait and see what comes from this.

Is This A Tough Time To Be A Male R&B Singer??

If you’re name isn’t Chris Brown, Miguel, or Trey Songz, and you wanna make it to the top of the charts as a male R&B singer then…good luck. Its gonna be a rough ride for anybody who isn’t one of those three young men and its beginning to look as though the decline of the male R&B singer–though unthinkable at one time–is upon us.
The irony here is that the male R&B (and before that, Soul) singer has always played the pivotal role in Urban music. And the more that music, especially Black music, evolves and changes, male R&B vocalists always find ways to stay in the mix.
Credit that to an ever-present throng of female fans, who tend to be the most dedicated of all music lovers. Often, its female music consumers who keep certain artists afloat and even halfway relevant. But it takes talent and staying power to stay above water in the midst of ever-changing musical times.
Interscope Records Mentioned In Federal Drug Case Against Rosemond

The federal case against fallen music industry power broker James Rosemond is heating up. Rosemond is facing an 18 count indictment that could land him in prison for the rest of his life if he’s convicted on all the charges against him.
But as the facts surrounding the case against him come to light, one major music industry entity has been thrown into the mix: Recording giant Interscope Records has been allegedly linked to a coast-to-coast drug operation!
Its been reported that the iconic label’s offices were raided by DEA agents today. This doesn’t look good at all.
Members of a narcotics ring that sent large amounts of cocaine and cash back and forth across the U.S. in music “road cases” arranged pickups and deliveries at the offices of Interscope Records, a music industry power whose roster includes artists like U2, Eminem, and Lady Gaga, according to federal investigators.
Department of Justice prosecutors this week provided defense lawyers with shipping records detailing “pickups and deliveries” made at Interscope’s Los Angeles office by a cargo firm that was used to transport the music cases, which were alternately stuffed with kilos of cocaine and upwards of $1 million in cash.

Outkast, Ciara May Follow L.A. Reid To ‘Epic’??
The Hollywood Reporter is saying that longtime music industry exec L.A.Reid, who’s also a judge on the music reality show ‘X Factor’, is bringing in two big name acts to the fold at Epic Records–Atlanta’s very own Outkast and Ciara.
Its a homecoming of sorts for both acts, who both were signed by Reid nearly a decade apart.
Reid, who helped put Atlanta on the music map in the late 80s and early 90s with his LaFace Records imprint ( a joint venture between Reid and singer/producer Babyface), was also responsible for signing Usher, TLC and Pink and others back in the day.
He took over at Epic in July and since then, he appears to be moving to spruce up the label’s roster, which was getting stale.
The last time Outkast was connected with Reid, the duo sold 11 million reords–2004′s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”.
Ciara’s debut album, “Goodies“, sold more than 2.5 million copies around the same time on LaFace. Numbers like that are gonna be extremely hard to repeat for either act but its certainly good news for Outkast fans, who’ve been hoping a reunion album might be coming soon.
And this couldn’t be better news for Ciara, who last year famously “prayed” for her label, Jive, to drop her–which it did, earlier this year. As of late, Ciara’s just been hanging around at different events and with BFF Kim Kardashian so a new label might give her a reason to do something constructive.
