Did Marquez Expose Pacquiao??

As expected, last night’s WBO welterweight title fight between champion Manny Pacquiao and Manuel Marquez–the third fight between the two–was a close one but Pacquiao won the contest by slight decision, 115-113, 114-114 and 116-112.

This hopefully, finally, sets the stage for the real contest: Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Vs. Manny Pacquiao. There’s no word on when–or even if–this fight will take place, since both sides have been making excuses for years to avoid the biggest fight in boxing.

For Pacquiao, last night’s win wasn’t easy. Neither fighter was knocked down but Marquez went toe to toe every round with Pacquiao. Fans took note and wonder would Mayweather, a more superior fighter than Marquez, possibly be more than Pacquiao can handle.

There was a lot of pressure in this fight, since both previous fights had been controversial; the first one in 2004 was ruled a draw; the rematch in 2008 was given to Pacquiao, but controversially. And this fight ended in controversy too, with many fans of Marquez saying he got robbed. According to those fans, again.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if there is yet another rematch between the two but most fans are waiting to see if that much-anticipated bout against Mayweather will happen soon.

The ‘Dream’ Is Slipping Away: Mike Vick’s Eagles Are In Real Trouble

That ‘Dream Team’ in Philly is a fantasy. Now 3-5, the latest team to expose Mike Vick and the Eagles as over-hyped celebrity ball players was the Chicago Bears, who traveled east to Pennsylvania to help push that fork that’s getting deeper off into the Eagles’ postseason hopes.

Of course, Michael Vick is shouldering most of the blame for the loss. Vick tried to get it done but was hampered by a Bears defense that limited his proven run capabilities and managed to help him add one more interception to his growing list of them this year.

Meanwhile, Vick is now 0-5 against the Bears, who clearly know how to stop his potent offensive skills.

Fans in Philly are now trying to figure out what kind of a football team they have and whether or not its capable of even going over .500. Its a shocking predicament for a team that looked to be back on track after blasting the Dallas Cowboys last week, just a few months after backup QB Vince Young infamously called the Eagles ‘The Dream Team”.

The Eagles have now fallen a full 3 games behind resurgent New York Giants–with just 8 games to go. It might be time for Eagles players to start planning their winter vacations, since they probably won’t be one of the twelve teams heading to the playoffs.

On a more positive note, I won a $50 bet on this game last night.

NY Post Puts Vick In Baby Pamper On Cover

The New York Post is at it again. Check out their “Baby Vick” cover on the left. The cover is apparently in response to Vick’s post-game interview with the press corps when he complained about getting hit a lot as a quarterback.

Vick also said some of the hits he suffered during the Eagles game against the Giants should have resulted in penalties against the Giants that Vick says weren’t called by the refs.

Vick ended up leaving the game before its conclusion with a bruised, non-throwing right hand, an injury suffered during one of the many times Giants players were able to hurl Vick around the field.

But the Giants say they didn’t do anything wrong. But you expected them to say that, huh?

And they don’t seem too apologetic either:

“I’m not gonna feel sorry for him,” Justin Tuck said.
“I didn’t see anything on film [yesterday] that looked like we were doing anything dirty,” Dave Tollefson said…
As defensive linemen, that’s our job — we’re supposed to hit the quarterback. I don’t think any of us apologize for any type of way that we hit him.”–(NYPost)

Did Vick “Check Out” Of Eagles-Falcons Game??

Last night’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons has been called everything from a bloodsport to a savage meeting of barbarians by clever sports writers, who must have expected to see “Swan Lake” instead of a grudge match. The game is rugged and so are the players. They know what time it is when they sign that contract.

There is a reason only men play in the NFL–and that’s not a sexist statement. Pro football is mean, often violent and frequently combative. Play after play, for three  and one half hours, 2 and 300 hundred pound bodies are hurled into, on top of and across each other. People are body slammed, knocked to the ground and spend the afternoon rolling around in grass that has been spit on.

To keep it simple, this is not Rugby or golf. So why is everybody acting like they’re shocked that Vick got hurt?

Let’s face it, the Eagles offensive line has never figured out how to protect Vick–and it shows. Eagles fans want to believe Vick was purposely knocked out of the game, in hopes of turning the game, which is untrue. If that was the case, then I guess Falcons fans could say the same about the Eagles, who got away with damn near beheading Matt Ryan in what appeared to be a purposeful helmet to helmet tackle on the quarterback–a definite NO-NO. Last night’s lousy referees ignored the hit though.

Some are saying Ryan, who was battered just as much as Vick, was the tougher QB in the match. And some are wondering just how much of this madness can Vick take?

Watching Matt Ryan and Mike Vick get hit so many times wasn’t easy. And no matter what Vick did, his mediocre O-line had to keep picking him up off the ground. When he ran, the Falcons went after that ass. When he stood still, they went after that ass. Vick learned a hard but simple lesson: Holding a football after the snap makes you a target. And targets get hit.

A human body can only take so much. Last week, Vick got tossed around against the St. Louis Rams. The thrashing he took last night wasn’t even as bad although the Falcons got to him more times than the Rams did. Did Vick’s body finally get tired of all that abuse–and he lost his will to stay in the Matador’s ring? Did he realize his mediocre O-line was gonna be the death of him if he stayed on that field? I wouldn’t blame him if he did “check out”. The Vick jerseys in the stands were misleading–last night’s game was not going to be a coronation.

As Vick was helped from the field, he spit out blood and then wobbled to the bench before leaving. He wasn’t made available for postgame interviews because new league rules make it so concussed players don’t have to talk.
Some in the Falcons locker room did the talking for him. Some players thought Vick checked out of the game.
“You could see him early taking those shots and he didn’t want to be there,” one Falcon said. “I’m not saying he checked out because he’s soft. It’s just that we hit him a lot.”–(Pete Prisco/CBS Sports)

Under the circumstances, its understandable.

Eagles Put On Ice In Hotlanta

As expected, tons of Michael Vick fans showed up to see Vick’s homecoming in the A. They wore his jerseys–both the Atlanta and Philadelphia one–and made plenty of noise from the stands.

Interestingly, the Vick vs. Matt Ryan fans fell sharply along racial lines, as many Black fans attended the game in Vick jerseys and many White fans attended the game in Matt Ryan jerseys.

It was quite a homecoming. But it might not have ended the way fans–nor Vick–expected.

The Atlanta Falcons defied naysayers and hung in there to win one of the ugliest Falcons home games in NFL Sunday night history, beating the Eagles at the Georgia Dome 35-31.

It was a game that saw several lead changes and multiple injuries. Both Michael Vick and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan took beatings tonight.

A third quarter sack ended with Vick colliding with his own teammate as he was being dragged to the ground. Vick left the field and was seen spitting out blood.

It was later reported that Vick has bitten his tongue and that Vick had also suffered a a concussion. He did not return to the game.

The all-star Philadelphia Eagles had been picked by many observers to roll the Falcons, who looked hapless last week against the Chicago Bears. But the Falcons played hard and tough and reminded the Eagles why they finished 13-3 last year: They play hard and are extremely tough to beat at home.

Side note: As Vick was leaving the field after his injury, he was booed. Sarcastically, Vick pointed to the scoreboard, essentially letting his haters know that he was beating them. At that point, the Eagles were ahead.

Steelers Fans Stunned: Ravens Thrash Steelers, Big Ben Throws 3 INTs

Before I go there, for the sake of disclosure, I have to tell you that the Ravens are one of my longtime, favorite squads (along with the 49ers/Falcons/Bears/Chargers). That said, Pittsburgh Steelers fans everywhere are in disbelief today, stunned by the routing that Big Ben and the eternally over-hyped Pittsburgh Steelers got today in Baltimore.

Turnovers were the name of Pittsburgh’s game today as the Ravens made the AFC champions look like amateurs on the field today, vanquishing the vaunted Steelers’ defense and posting a 35-7 victory that could have been even worse.

Its the worst opening season loss the Steelers have ever suffered, and the first they dropped since 2003.

For Ravens fans, gone were the bitter memories of last season’s divisional loss, which crushed the hearts of Baltimore fans who once again watched the Steelers put an end to yet another promising Ravens season. The Ravens, who entered the game with one question mark that always seems to define its postseason hopes, can they dominate the Pittsburgh Steelers and handily so?, answered with a big, resounding YES.

Many obseervers believe the only team standing in the way of a Ravens championship is the Steelers, since everybody knows the Ravens are one of only two teams in the AFC (the other the Chargers) who can match up against the explosive Patriots.

That said, the Steelers and Ravens will meet again in the regular season and perhaps in the postseason as well. Game on.

Serena Williams Upset In Tennis Finals; Calls Game Judge “Unattractive”

Tennis superstar Serena Williams was upset today and, in a manner that’s becoming her trademark, lost her cool and had some unflattering things to say to the line judge, who stripped a point from Serena after she screamed “Come On!” to her competitor, relative lightweight Samantha Stosur.

Screaming gutturally like that is some sort of no no in tennis, they say.

That is a classic violation of tennis’ intentional hindrance rule, the equivalent of unsportsmanlike conduct in this genteel sport. Chair umpire Eva Asderaki correctly awarded the point to Stosur, who merely got a racket on the ball…

That point turned out to be the beginning of a comeback for Stosur, who edged out the much more accomplished Serena, who was widely expected to win the Finals.

That point issue pissed off Serena’s fans in the crowd and inspired her to say this to the female line judge:

“Aren’t you the one who screwed me over last time here?” she asked Asderaki, perhaps confusing her with then-chair umpire Louise Engzell “Do you have it out for me? That’s totally not cool.”–(ESPN)

Serena doesn’t play with judges. Remember when she offered to stuff a tennis ball down the throat of a terrified, miniature-sized Korean woman who was a line judge?  That broad ran for her life from the Amazon-ish Serena. It didn’t escalate to that point this time, fortunately.

Later, as her tirade escalated, she defended her right to vent, saying, “We’re in America last time I checked.” In a final jab, she called Asderaki “unattractive inside.”

Maybe next year.

Angst In The A: Are Falcons Gonna Be The Biggest Disappointment Of The NFL Season??

The Atlanta Falcons started the new NFL season in the same fashion that they ended the last one–with a disastrous showing and an unexpected and brutal loss.

This one came at the hands of yet another NFC North franchise, the Chicago Bears, who came into the game 3 point underdogs against the Falcons, who finished last season 13-3 atop the NFC.

Everything that could be done wrong was done wrong by the Falcons and much-hyped quarterback, Matt Ryan, who was sacked 5 times. The team that was supposed to debut an explosive offense ran into a hurricane in the Windy City–and only managed one touchdown all day, a defensive one, that fell into the hands of Kim Zolciak’s baby daddy, Kroy Biermann.

None of the Falcons’ famous players shined today. Manhandled and humiliated, they were dragged around the field and ultimately fell 30-12 to the Bears.

With Mike Vick and the Eagles coming to town next week, they won’t have much time to prepare for a turnaround.

Note: The Eagles have not had a problem beating the Falcons for quite some time now, even when Vick himself played in Atlanta.

And now, fans of the Falcons are now predisposed to a stunning possibility: The team that was expected to take it all last year, and this year as well, could end up being the biggest bust of the new NFL season. How the fuck is this possible?

It should be noted that few teams make it to the playoffs after starting 0-2. A loss to the eagles next week, then one to the upstart Tampa Bay Bucs, and another to the Green Bay Packers, all coming to the A in the next few weeks, could spell disaster for the Dirty Birds, who just might suddenly and inexplicably find themselves in a nasty hole–and watching the race to the postseason from outside the looking glass.
