Throwback Video Of The Week: Lil’ Troy – Wanna Be A Baller

Lil Troy was a relatively unknown rapper out of Houston, Texas when this track dropped in 1998. The song quickly grew legs and became a monster hit that sat on the charts well past 1998 and into 1999 and the year 2000. Troy’s debut album, Sittin’ Fat Down South, featured several Southern rap heavyweights, including Master P. and Scarface, and fell slightly short of double platinum status. Certainly not bad for a rookie.

However, by the time Troy got around to dropping his sophomore release a couple of years later, people must have started realizing that maybe he wasn’t such a good rapper after all and the next album flopped.

His third album, 2006′s Paperwork, didn’t do any better.

But Troy wasn’t a fool and decided to capitalize on his fame by opening a club in Houston called The Orbit Room. Not sure if its still open or not though so maybe my Houston readers will let me know for sure?

Throwback Clip Of The Week: Omar Little Killed On ‘The Wire’

HBO’s ‘The Wire’ was one of the most-watched, most popular TV shows ever to air on TV–period. And Michael K. Williams, who played the groundbreaking “Omar Little” character, ended up becoming a very familiar face after the show ended its seven season run.

BTW, dope boy robber Omar Little was probably the most talked about, vilified and admired character from the show. Its hard to imagine the show being as successful as it was without him. But Omar’s life had been so unpredictably violent that you just knew something bad was gonna happen to him before the show eventually ended. And of course, it did. This is the scene where Omar meets his match–an unlikely one at that.

HBO always comes out with some on point shows. Remember OZ and The Sopranos?

Throwback Clip: Lil Kim (feat. Puff Daddy) – No Time

This is the dirty version, so be forewarned if words like “niggaz” and “twat” offend you. Don’t you miss the 90s Lil Kim? I definitely do. You might recall ‘No Time’ being one of Kim’s earliest solo hits. She absolutely changed the game back in ’96, shortly after her split from Junior M.A.F.I.A.

Anybody who thinks she didn’t set a trendsetting, blazing path for the likes of Foxy, Trina, Nicki and others is trippin’ hard, as they used to say back in the 90s.

For the younger fans, Kim might hardly be recognizable since this video was done well before Kim started casually adding cosmetic enhancements like she was picking up fresh fruit at Kroger.

R.I.P. Lil Kim’s throwback face. Always love me some Kim, regardless of how many times she transforms herself.

Throwback Clip Of The Week… Xscape: Understanding

The Atlanta all-female quartet Xscape catapulted up the record charts close to 20 years ago on the back of their defining, platinum 1993 debut album, ‘Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha’, which yielded the massive hits “Just Kickin’ It”, and “Understanding”.

A lot of people assumed Xscape was just an Atlanta version of the then-chart topping group En Vogue but Xscape was much more than just that. Their combined, soulful sound coupled with a laid back, Hip Hop edge was game changing in the 1990s and helped put the group on top of the charts for several years.

The ladies of Xscape combined subtle glamour and down-home sophistication into one rhythmic package and music fans loved it.

Four albums were released by the group before they officially disbanded in 2005 but before that happened, they had already set a high bar for R&B/Hip Hop Soul groups.

Throwback Clip Of The Week: New Kids On The Block-Please Don’t Go Girl

In case you don’t remember New Kids On The Block (don’t feel bad ’cause I barely do myself), they were a 5-member group who originated in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1980s and turned out a number of top 10 hits for close to a decade.

The group was trendsetting during that time: A group of young White dudes with a decidedly R&B sound.

NKOTB was the brainchild of producer Maurice Starr, who’d found major success with the chart-topping R&B group New Edition. After NE broke up, and after realizing what could have been, Starr decided to try marketing a White version of New Edition.

Throwback Clip Of The Week… DeBarge: Time Will Reveal

Many of us can probably thank the music of old-school R&B group DeBarge that we’re here; back in the 1980s, the family group was the then-modern version of The Jacksons, turning out soulful pop hits like they were cotton candy.

Matter of fact, a big reason the group was discovered was in large part due to Jermaine Jackson. But making it big proved to be an Achilles Heel for the group, as success turned to bitter drug addiction and the eventual disintegration of the extremely gifted band.

The group exploded onto the scene in the early part of the 80s but by the end of the decade were musical toast. Drug use ran through the talented family and left carnage in its wake. By the time the new century arrived one of the famous siblings was dead–Bobby DeBarge, of an AIDS related condition which came as a result of his addiction, and the other family members were all addicts. Its one of the most tragic stories ever told in Urban music.

Up until I saw the TV One Unsung documentary about the group last night, I had no idea the entire singing clan at one point or another was hooked on drugs–very bad drugs, like heroin.

The late Bobby DeBarge’s wife even admitted she was shocked back then by the whole family’s extreme addiction, saying she’d never been exposed to anything like that ever before in her life.

Years later, the group’s most famous member, El DeBarge, is still grappling with a long standing abuse problem. he made a well-received comeback last year but ultimately ended up back in rehab. Nevertheless, the group’s enormous talent and the timelessness of their hits are undeniable all these years later.

Even if you weren’t born until way after this group made an impact, “The DeBarge Sound” is unmistakable.

According to their “UnSung” feature, the family still records and has a tight bond. And several of the children of the famous siblings are also stepping out in the music scene on their own. But its hard to fill these extra- large shoes.
